Burniture: Furniture
with an Artist's Touch |
Doug Lake again, inventor of the Burniture process. I'll tell you all
about Burniture as you scroll down this page.
By the way, if you'd like to arrange a personal visit to my studio to see my
inventory and the pieces I may be working on at the time (by appointment
only, please), I'd enjoy your company. Contact me

The Story of Burniture |
Burniture is the art of burning beautiful designs into furniture. I
created the process a few years ago. And the reaction has been great.
Fellow craftspeople at the Sugarloaf show last year in Timonium said
they hadn't seen anything like it. And some of them have traveled the
craft circuit for over 30 years! |

What's the Burniture
process? |
 |
I'd love to demonstrate it for you. The first piece of Burniture I
created was a wooden stool. Each stool is hand selected. I lightly draw
each design directly onto the stool.
After completing the drawing, I begin the process of burning-in. I burn
the background carefully into the wood, actually brushing on heat with a
woodburning tool. I never allow the tool to gouge the wood. The art of
Burniture is a subtle art. By burning in the background, I allow the
natural wood to show through the design. It is then enhanced with a
light glaze, which pulls it all together and gives the design and
background an added depth and sheen.

How long does a piece
of Burniture take to create? |
Each stool takes 25-30 hours. Other pieces can take much longer,
depending on the size. I put the love of my art into every piece. Each
is unique and beautiful, and will be a lovely addition to your home,
office, or yacht. Whether you choose a single piece, a set, or a whole
series collection, you will own sturdy, functional, and beautiful
furniture worthy of the Arts and Crafts movement which has inspired my
art. They are also known to be wonderful conversation pieces.
How sturdy is Burniture? Read more about it on our
furniture page. |
